Shawn Wilker

Shawn Wilker, MD
Senior Reader, Ophthalmology

MERIT Employee Spotlight is a series featuring team members introducing themselves, outlining their role at MERIT, and explaining why they chose to work in the clinical trials industry.

Dr. Shawn Wilker is board-certified in ophthalmology and is a retinal specialist with over 15 years of clinical experience.

What is your role at MERIT?

I help lead the development of evaluation procedures for ophthalmic imaging grading at MERIT. My responsibilities include analyzing and reading images and/or data for ophthalmic clinical trials, performing reading quality control tasks, developing analysis and reading procedures, and providing training for readers.

What do you like about working at MERIT?

My expertise and passion lie in ophthalmic imaging and testing, making my role at the reading center a perfect fit. I play an active role in shaping the center’s involvement in major clinical trials, working closely with sponsors who seek guidance on the best imaging modalities and endpoints to achieve their study goals.

What do you enjoy the most about clinical research?

It is incredibly fulfilling to see a new treatment reach the market, knowing that it has the potential to positively impact millions of patients.

What do you do in your free time?

Outside of work, I spend much of my free time exploring the Cleveland Metroparks, where I am fortunate to have access to scenic bike and walking trails. Additionally, as a classically trained pianist, I enjoy practicing and sharing my music on my YouTube channel. I have been happily married for 10 years, and while we do not have children, our dog Toby, who is thoroughly spoiled, brings us plenty of joy.
