MERIT Executive Spotlight is a series featuring executive team members introducing themselves and explaining why they chose to work in the clinical trials industry and at MERIT.
What is your role at MERIT?
As VP of Medical and Scientific Affairs at MERIT, I oversee the ophthalmology reader and data management teams as well as our reading center operations. I collaborate with our partners to assist with study design and consultation. I work extensively with study sponsors and CROs to develop imaging protocols and grading forms to meet the specific needs of each trial. My team is focused on maintaining quality initiatives and providing timely deliverables to ensure the effective execution of clinical trials for our partners.
What is your background?
I first began ophthalmic research during my PhD at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, where I researched retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) imaging. I became particularly interested in ophthalmic imaging technologies and their various applications across clinical research and patient care. My role has shifted many times over my years of working in the ophthalmic industry. My experience spans medical device startups and large companies, with hands-on work across hardware and system R&D, application software development, and clinical validation for device and software premarket clearance. That experience prepared me for my current role at MERIT, where I focus on endpoint assessment for clinical trials—bringing together my technical, clinical, and regulatory background to support high‑quality evidence generation.
What do you like about working at MERIT?
In my five years at MERIT, I have witnessed the tremendous growth of our reader and data management teams, both of which are rigorous, dedicated, and quality focused. It is exciting to see our reading capabilities and project portfolios continue to expand. This growth is fueled by the ongoing development of our EXCELSIOR™ software, the accumulation of medical and reading center expertise, and the reliable delivery of quality work. I feel very fortunate to be working alongside colleagues who are so knowledgeable, skilled, and supportive.
What do you do in your free time?
Based in San Diego, CA, I enjoy traveling with my husband and three kids. We try to visit a couple of new places each year (this year so far: Athens, Alexandria and Cairo!). I also like to return to places we have visited before to admire the scenery, local culture, people, and food.
