MERIT Employee Spotlight is a series featuring team members introducing themselves, outlining their role at MERIT, and explaining why they chose to work in the clinical trials industry.
What is your role at MERIT?
As Director of Ophthalmology Project Management, I lead our Project Management team, providing both operational and strategic direction across a portfolio of over 125 active studies. My team manages projects across the full lifecycle, from study start-up and documentation to site communication and close-out. I work closely with all MERIT departments to ensure alignment and cohesive study delivery.
What do you like about working at MERIT?
I really enjoy how collaboratively all teams work and support one another; everyone is invested in seeing each other succeed. Working remotely allows for a good work-life balance, but traveling to conferences to see my colleagues in person is always a highlight of my year.
Why did you get into clinical research?
I started my career as an ophthalmic photographer, working in a clinic and clinical research capacity. Seeing family members and close friends suffer from vision loss drove my initial interest in ophthalmology clinical research; being part of a cause that could bring treatments to people suffering with vision loss is incredibly rewarding. The ophthalmology therapeutic area is always evolving with new imaging and testing modalities, which allows for opportunities to always be learning something new.
Why did you get into clinical research?
My journey into clinical research began during my first job at a large pharma 14 years ago. While I enjoyed the theoretical aspects of science, I found myself drawn to the practical side—project management of a clinical trial. For me, clinical research is the vital bridge between the laboratory and the patient’s bedside. This realization has motivated me to pursue personal growth in the industry ever since. Over time, my interest evolved into a passion for IRC services, which is a critical part of proving drug efficacy. I enjoy the challenge of managing complex studies and the satisfaction of knowing that my work contributes to the advancement of medicine. That desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives is what ultimately led me to build my career in clinical research.
What do you do in your free time?
I’m based in Rochester, New York. When I’m not working, you can find me playing or crafting with my two daughters or chasing around our German Shepherd puppy. I also enjoy gardening, trying new restaurants, and baking sweet treats.
