MERIT Employee Spotlight:
Gene Kim

Gene Kim, PharmD
Associate Director of Medical Affairs & Innovation, Oncology

MERIT Employee Spotlight is a series featuring team members introducing themselves, outlining their role at MERIT, and explaining why they chose to work in the clinical trials industry.

What do you do at MERIT?

As a member of our medical affairs team, I build relationships with our KOLs and radiologists to support our sponsors’ imaging outcome needs. I work closely with the EXCELSIOR software development team to integrate necessary features, response criteria, and eCRF functions that are aligned with industry and research standards. I also support our project management team in configuring projects, reviewing study-related documents, and assisting with data management activities.

What do you like about working here?

The best part about working at MERIT is that we have great teamwork and support. Our entire team supports each other to ensure our sponsors’ studies run smoothly and efficiently. MERIT’s leadership team welcomes discussion, excels at guiding teams, and provides various opportunities to widen perspective beyond what I can see alone. The close daily interaction is great for both company and individual achievements and growth. I enjoy sharing oncology trial knowledge and expertise through our webinars. Also, I work remotely and appreciate the flexibility this allows.

Why did you get into clinical research?

Clinical research piqued my interest early even as I was considering becoming a science major in college. I’m particularly interested in the application of science and knowledge to help people. This desire to help people led me to initially work in clinical practice in pharmacy, and then to supporting clinical trials at MERIT.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work?

I’m based in Madison, Wisconsin and like to play musical instruments and go to the gym. I enjoy cooking, traveling, and watching scary movie reviews on YouTube. I also love to play with my dog Danchu, an 11-month-old, 9 pound Poochon (a cross between a Toy Poodle and Bichon Frise).
